Vaccine Court Paid $73 Million to 256 Victims in Past Year
The Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP) has released updated data on payouts to victims and attorneys as of March 1, 2020.
There were 256 people with vaccine injuries who received financial awards from the VICP, for a total payout of $73.3 million — or an average payment of $286,000 to each victim, plus additional compensation to cover their attorneys’ fees.
The program also paid about $11 million to dozens of lawyers who helped victims file claims, including claims that were compensated as well as dismissed.
This year had a relatively low number of petitions filed, with only 434 new claims. It often takes years for the court to decides whether or not to award compensation.
Since 1988, over 21,636 petitions have been filed with the VICP. Over that 30-year time period, the program has paid out approximately $4.2 billion to more than 7,000 people who were injured by vaccines.
